How Can Yoga Therapy Help My Neurology Patients?

Yoga Therapy Associates Logo

Yoga therapy uses mind-body based practices such as movement, breathwork, and meditation to help people manage their symptoms. Practices are tailored to each client and targeted to their condition.

The yoga therapist works with your patient to develop a treatment plan based on metrics. Practices are evaluated throughout the treatment plan to determine efficacy.

Our neurology clients report reduced stress, reduced symptoms, greater awareness of how their lifestyle affects their condition, and better coping mechanisms for living with chronic conditions.

How Yoga Therapy Helped A Woman Suffering From Neurological Symptoms

J.K. was a woman in her 50s referred for yoga therapy by her neurologist after screening for ALS and receiving a diagnosis of benign fasciculation syndrome. The client had a history of chronic anxiety, marked by ruminating thoughts on fears of dying and a need to stay busy.

Her symptoms included involuntary muscle twitching at bedtime associated with sleep onset insomnia. Episodes of insomnia could last up to five days a time. She felt traumatized by her experiences falling asleep or relaxing. She had tried cognitive behavioral therapy and a variety of anti-anxiety drugs and benzodiazepines without relief.

Her yoga therapy treatment plan for home practice included breathwork three times a day for 10 minutes each session.

After 8 weeks of practice, J.K.’s fasciculations resolved and she reported no complications falling asleep. She experienced a reduction in frequency of ruminating thoughts and an increased sense of well-being.

J.K.’s experience is not atypical.

Our clients often come to us when they exhaust other treatment options. Yoga therapy offers mind-body practices that can be transformative for symptom management.
